Bandits announce scholarship program

The Chicago Bandits announced Wednesday theirs plans for the new Scholar Athlete of the Week program sponsored by TransNational Bankcard in Rosemont.

"We are very excited about the launch of the Scholar Athlete Program," said Bandits General Manager Aaron M. Moore. "We had a lot of success in the past with our Team of the Week program, and we feel like this is an even greater opportunity to recognize athletes in our sport and area.

"TransNational is a great partner of the Bandits and we couldn't be happier to have them on board."

The new program will run during the course of the 2014 high school softball season and will provide an opportunity for a student to win a $1,000 scholarship courtesy of TransNational.

"TransNational has long rewarded educational achievements and continually supports continuing education," stated Kimberly Foster, Marketing Manager for TransNational. "In an attempt to channel our beliefs through a community-centric endeavor, we are very excited to support the Chicago Bandits High School Scholarship Program."

Parents, coaches, administrators and even fellow students will be able to nominate a softball player from their school for the award. Submissions must be turned in each Friday by 5 p.m. in order to be considered for the award. Each week, the nominations will be voted upon by Bandits and TransNational staff members, with one winner being selected.

Nominations of student athletes will consist of both accomplishments on the diamond, in the classroom and in the community.

Weekly award winners will be featured on the Bandits social media and home page of the Bandits website. All weekly award winners will be eligible for the scholarship with the winner being named on June 9. The scholarship recipient will be recognized on the field prior to the Bandits vs. USSSA Pride game on June 14.

In addition the partnering with the Bandits on the Scholar Athlete program, TransNational is also a primary sponsor of the team's reading program, which is currently at 2,200 students. TransNational will be the game sponsor of the June 14 game and will be working with the Bandits on partnering on a canned food drive.

The Bandits begin the season with an exhibition game against the Indiana Slammers on May 25 at 5 p.m. at The Ballpark at Rosemont. The team's first regular season home game will be on May 31 against the Akron Racers.
