Illinois man gets 6 months in jobless benefits theft

EAST ST. LOUIS - A southwestern Illinois man has been ordered to spend six months in federal prison for stealing unemployment benefits.

Thirty-one-year-old Mark A. Lewis of Swansea also was sentenced Wednesday to three years of post-prison supervised release during an appearance in an East St. Louis federal court. He also must repay roughly $2,000 to the federal U.S. Railroad Retirement Board.

Lewis pleaded guilty last November to a theft charge. He admitted that from January through May of last year he improperly collected unemployment benefits while hiding the fact he had a job.
