It is quite rare that we rescind an endorsement of a political candidate we once considered promising, but today we see little choice. On Feb. 18, we endorsed Manju Goel for the Republican nomination for 8th Congressional District over Larry Kaifesh. But in the intervening weeks, much has transpired that has led to growing unease about Goel's judgment, her ethics and her ability to think independently.
A website and social media accounts engineered by a political action committee that Goel's chief backer founded -- but for whom he says he has no more contact -- are sleazy attempts to confuse readers into thinking they are the work of Kaifesh. Goel had plenty of time to denounce the sites but didn't do so until this week and, at best, only halfheartedly. This is no way to win a race.
As for Kaifesh, his unwillingness to reveal his backers and his transient living arrangements give us little comfort. Neither candidate is endorsed.
