5 injured in head-on crash in Aurora

A woman and three children were injured Monday night when a vehicle struck them head-on, injuring the other driver as well and closing the Illinois Avenue Bridge in Aurora, police said.

At about 8:20 p.m. a Cadillac heading east was involved in a minor crash on Illinois Avenue just east of Route 31, police said in a release.

The driver fled from that accident east on the bridge, lost control and jumped the median, hitting a Chevy Aveo driven by a woman with three children inside that was traveling west, police said.

All five people were injured and taken to an Aurora hospital.

Aurora Police spokesman Dan Ferrelli said the bridge was reopened at about 1 a.m. Tuesday morning, and that all people involved in the crash are expected to recover.

He said driving under the influence charges are expected later this morning.

Aurora police continue to investigate.
