Honor our Olympians with tax-free medals

I don't know how I missed this before, but while reading today's paper I was amazed to see that our Olympic winners are taxed by both our federal and state governments on their prize money and the value of their medals! What is wrong with our governments? These young people have spent great amounts of time and money to develop their athletic abilities (without compensation from the government), they are selected to represent our country at the Olympics (with I'm sure great expense for their families), and then are taxed on their meager winnings.

I am so disgusted with and disappointed in those who made the decision to tax them. We, as a country, waste and give away to foreign countries so much money and yet tax our Olympians on their winnings. Shame on us.
