Corps spending $25 million on Great Lakes projects
TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will spend $25 million on navigation projects in the Great Lakes, including dredging of harbors choked with silt because of low water levels.
Michigan U.S. Sens. Carl Levin and Debbie Stabenow announced the funding Wednesday. They and other members of the U.S. Senate's Great Lakes Task Force sent a letter to the Corps in February asking that more harbor maintenance funds be devoted to the eight-state region.
Levin says the money would help provide access to harbors that have become so shallow they're increasingly unusable.
Michigan harbors scheduled for dredging include the Black River at Port Huron, Cheboygan, Grand Haven, Leland, Menominee, Monroe, Saginaw River and St. Joseph.
