Illinois lawmakers have mixed reviews of speed cameras

Illinois lawmakers have mixed thoughts on a proposal that would allow communities around the state to install speed cameras, which are only allowed in Chicago.

The Springfield bureau of Lee Enterprises newspapers reports (http://bit.ly/1kZGX2a ) the measure by Collinsville Democrat Rep. Jay Hoffman is generating discussion among legislators.

Murphysboro Republican Rep. Mike Bost calls the devices a "cop-in-a-box," and says his constituents think they harass drivers.

But Sen. Andy Manar, a Bunker Hill Democrat, says they can increase safety.

Legislation signed by the governor in 2012 limited speed cameras to cities with at least 1 million residents, making the statute apply solely to Chicago.

Speed cameras are only allowed in designated safety zones — areas near a school or a park. Drivers caught by the cameras can face $100 fines.
