Bill for sickened students will top $70,000
Medical bills for more than 60 students sickened by an odor from a northern Illinois landfill will cost Waste Management more than $70,000.
The school board in District 428 in DeKalb approved an agreement that sets Waste Management's bill for medical and ambulance charges from the Jan. 14 incident at its landfill at just over $69,000. An unspecified amount for fire trucks and other emergency services is expected to take the total over $70,000.
The Daily Chronicle in DeKalb reports that the company also agreed to pay as much as $10,000 for other costs incurred by the school district.
Dozens of adults and children from Cortland Elementary School just outside DeKalb were treated for low levels of carbon monoxide during the incident.
