UIC employee's film nominated for Academy Award

CHICAGO — A University of Illinois at Chicago employee could join the likes of Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks as an Oscar winner this weekend.

A documentary produced by Edgar Barens is up for an Academy Award on Sunday. Barens is a media specialist for the Jane Addams Center for Social Policy and Research at UIC.

The documentary is titled "Prison Terminal: The Last Days of Private Jack Hall." The film follows the final days of a terminally ill prisoner in an Iowa maximum-security penitentiary.

Barens says his life has been a whirlwind ever since being nominated. He says he began sobbing with feelings accomplishment when he saw his name on a list of nominees.

And his accomplishments could grow even bigger if he's awarded a gold statue this Sunday.
