Auditor reports more Illinois computers missing

The Illinois auditor general's office says the number of computers lost by state agencies in the past two years is nearing the 500 mark.

The Springfield bureau of Lee Enterprises newspapers reports Auditor General Bill Holland found the governor's office lost or misplaced seven computers, including some containing data that may not have been encrypted. In his report released Thursday, Holland said failure to track down the missing computers could result in a data breach.

Officials of Gov. Pat Quinn's administration say all of the missing computers were misplaced prior to him taking office. They say they know the whereabouts of one computer.

Holland's office has previously determined Southern Illinois University and the Illinois Department of Corrections are unable to account for a total of about 490 computers.
