Des Plaines seniors can apply for garbage discount starting Monday

Seniors in Des Plaines will soon be able to apply for a discount on their garbage collection fees.

An 8 percent senior discount is included in the city's new 7-year solid waste collection contract with Republic Services, Inc., approved earlier this month by the city council.

Starting Monday, residents over age 65 will be able to begin applying for the discount, which will take effect at the start of the new contract term on April 1.

The bimonthly senior rate will be $30, compared to the regular bimonthly rate of $32.60. Republic is permitted to increase rates each year in an amount not to exceed the increase in the consumer price index, though it couldn't exceed 2.5 percent.

An estimated 1,500 to 2,300 Des Plaines households could be eligible for the senior rate, officials have said.

To receive the discount, residents must complete a form and return it in person at the finance department at city hall. Residents must provide a state-issued driver's license or identification card, birth certificate, or United States passport; and a copy of a valid deed or current property tax bill. No customer may receive a senior discount for more than one dwelling in the city, officials said.
