Hanover Park recognized for sustainable snow removal

Hanover Park has notched an honor recognizing environmentally-friendly practices in the village's salt supply.

The Salt Institute awarded Hanover Park with the Safe and Sustainable Snowfighting Award.

The Alexandria, Va.-based trade association looked for proper maintenance and good housekeeping in the village's stockpiles.

"The familiar sight of trucks spreading salt on icy winter roads gives motorists reassurance, as it should," Salt Institute President Lori Roman said in a news release. "If that salt was stored in and spread by a facility honored with a Safe and Sustainable Snowfighting award, motorists have the added assurance of knowing the utmost care has been taken to protect public safety and the environment."

Only 90 agencies in the United States and Canada received the award.

"I am proud of our Public Works Department and their commitment to providing safe travel to the motoring public, as well as dedication to protect our environment," Street Division Supervisor Scott Weber said in the release.
