Carol Stream fire destroys home, cars

Fire destroyed a house and two cars Friday night on the 1300 block of Lance Lane in Carol Stream.

Witnesses said they saw flames shooting from the roof and back of the two-story Queen Anne-style house. The blaze caused extensive damage throughout the home and attached garage.

At least one firefighter appeared to be injured while battling the blaze which was reported around 6:30 p.m.

Carol Stream fire Lt. Robert Schultz said the cause is still under investigation.

The first arriving companies reported a fully involved fire in the garage attached to the house. Heavy smoke was pushing out of the garage and traveling to the second floor of the home.

Schultz said companies at first attacked the home’s interior, but after several minutes they pulled out and switched to a defensive approach, due to the fact that there was fire in the basement as well as the first and second floor.

They then switched back to an interior attack, entering the building.

A total of four hand lines were used on the fire, he said.

Schultz said one firefighter suffered a minor injury and was transported to Central DuPage Hospital.

There were no other injuries. One of the biggest challenges stemmed from the cold weather.

“Obviously the water freezes so much quicker everywhere,” he said. “Everything becomes like an ice-skating rink.”

The house, he said, is uninhabitable. Damages have yet to be determined.
