Save the trees at LeRoy Oaks preserve

I was extremely appalled and saddened to learn of the current restoration plan at LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve after talking with a naturalist at the Creek Bend Nature Center the other day. I walk my dog there at least three times per week and am aware of what's going on at that property.

I witnessed a huge swath of trees being clear cut from the "cathedral" near Dean Street in December and January. After talking with the naturalist this week I was made aware that more trees will be taken down along the road of the old entrance. These are all beautiful mature pine trees. The reason for their demise is because they are "not native." This is absurd, frightening and sad.

I thought the forest preserve districts were created in the early 1900s to preserve the forests. Many animals and birds, including raptors, use these trees for food and shelter. I was told by the naturalist that the animals would have to go somewhere else.

I am asking the Kane County Board to please rethink the current restoration plan at Le Roy Oaks Forest Preserve and save the trees.
