Illinois man dies after snowmobile hits trees in Wisconsin

HURLEY, Wis. — A 46-year-old Illinois man is dead after his snowmobile hit several trees in northern Wisconsin.

Iron County Sheriff Tony Furyk says a group of people were traveling on a trail when the man’s snowmobile veered off and struck the trees in the Town of Mercer. Alcohol and speed are believed to have contributed to the crash. It was reported at about 3:30 a.m. Saturday.

The Department of Natural Resources is investigating.

In southern Wisconsin, a 48-year-old Campbellsport woman is recovering after her snowmobile became airborne and rolled several times Sunday night in the Town of Auburn. According to the Fond du Lac County sheriff’s department, she has serious injuries but is expected to survive.
