Wisconsin high school won’t bring back Indian mascot

MUKWONAGO, Wis. — Mukwonago High School won a legal battle to keep its Indians nickname and logo, but the Waukesha County school has no plans to flaunt it.

Other Wisconsin schools that eliminated race-based mascot names also have the right to resurrect them, but they don’t plan to either.

The fight over Native American mascots led to bitter feelings on both sides, with some wanting to maintain tradition and others claiming the names were racist.

Mukwonago officials and alumni helped push through a new law making it harder to force schools to drop tribal names.

But Mukwonago district superintendent Shawn McNulty says with that victory in hand, there’s no need to make a fuss. Students seem satisfied with a “fast M” logo the school developed during the fight.
