‘Bureaucracy’ blamed for missed psychiatric exam

It has yet to be determined if a suburban Chicago woman is fit to stand trial in the death of her infant granddaughter because the ordered psychiatric exam hasn’t been done.

Sixty-one-year-old Alfreda Giedrojc of Oak Lawn is charged with first-degree murder for allegedly using a sledgehammer in October to kill 6-month-old Vivian Summers. Prosecutors say the grandmother also used a kitchen knife to slit the baby’s throat.

Assistant Public Defender Michael Wilson asked for the mental evaluation during a December hearing.

The SouthtownStar reports Assistant Cook County State’s Attorney Michael Deeno told Judge Colleen Hyland on Wednesday the order was issued for the evaluation, but Forensic Clinical Services never got the order.

Wilson says he will fax the order to Forensic Clinical Services and hand-deliver a copy.
