Catholic schools are a source of pride

As I read the Jan. 25 Daily Herald I was horrified to see the political cartoon about Chicago’s Roman Catholic bishops. Where is the cartoon of a union leader fighting to reinstate a teacher viewing pornography on a school computer during the teaching day? The sex abuse within the church is a crime, to be sure, but I know the number of dedicated men and women far outweighs the bad.

I am a practicing Catholic who has worked in the Catholic school system for all of my professional career. During that time I have met countless priests, brothers, sisters and lay people who have dedicated their lives to a faith/value-based education whose success rate both academically and spiritually is a source of pride. When other systems have failed their children, parents often turn to Catholic schools to assist them in the growth and development of God’s most precious gift to them.

This week is Catholic Schools Week. I can only hope that the news media will give the same attention to the good the church has accomplished as it continues to struggle with the sins of a few.
