Man charged in son’s snowmobile death

KANKAKEE, Ill. — A Kankakee County man is free on $100,000 bond after being charged with DUI, child endangerment and leaving the scene after a snowmobile accident that left his 7-year-old son dead.

Chad L. Osterhoff is charged in the Dec. 14 death of Cale Osterhoff. Kankakee County Coroner Bob Gessner said the boy was wearing a helmet but was killed when the snowmobile went into a ditch near Kankakee and turned over.

Because Osterhoff was hospitalized after the accident, prosecutors waited until he was discharged before filing charges.

Special prosecutor Charles M. Colburn, who took the case after the Kankakee County state’s attorney’s office cited a potential conflict of interest, said Osterhoff was released Tuesday from a rehabilitation center. Colburn refused to give details of the crash or reveal Osterhoff’s blood-alcohol level.
