Not offended by all-Spanish flyer

I read with interest the Jan. 18 letter from the Elgin resident who was offended by receiving his bank’s all Spanish flyer. I had a similar experience with my own bank as I could not read nor understand a word of their flyer.

Unlike your letter writer, I immediately enrolled in a Spanish class at Elgin Community College. I was fortunate to have a marvelous professor who, in addition to teaching the basics of the Spanish language, introduced me to the beautiful, ancient Hispanic history and culture.

When I visit my bank now, I am now able to greet and converse with the lovely native Hispanic bank associate, who speaks perfect English, in a fairly fluent manner. We are both all the richer for the experience.

I am reminded of the words of Mahatma Gandhi. “Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.”
