Coverage of the cold warmed the heart

Your coverage of the recent Ice Age arrival to the Northwest suburban area was excellent! While staying toasty indoors, I was happy to read, not experience, being outdoors in subzero cold, scraping snow, watching for black ice while driving or being stalled at O’Hare, on an expressway or a Metra commuter train. Thank you to all the Herald workers who endured nasty weather to bring readers the cold-weather news.

Animals also suffer in bad weather, so it was good to see the article about keeping pets safe. Thanks too for running the initial story about Blue, the peacock who escaped the Randall Oaks Barnyard Zoo in 12-degrees-below-zero weather, and the follow-up story that the poor bird died despite his rescue and follow-up care. The zoo’s director said the park district would to look into making “sure nothing like this ever happens again.” I hope something is done to keep zoo’s creatures safe, whatever the weather.
