Notre Dame WR not enrolled for spring

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Wide receiver and former Vernon Hills High School standout DaVaris Daniels is not enrolled at Notre Dame for the spring semester, becoming the third high-profile Fighting Irish athlete in the past year to be suspended from school for academic problems.

Michael Bertsch, the school’s director of football media relations, said Thursday because of privacy laws he couldn’t comment further on why Daniels wasn’t enrolled. But he released a statement from Daniels saying he plans to be back in time for next season.

“I understand that attending the University of Notre Dame is a privilege and with that comes a certain level of academic responsibility. Therefore, I will not be attending Notre Dame in the spring semester but fully expect to re-enroll in the summer semester to earn my degree and continue playing football for the Irish,” he said.

Jerian Grant, the leading scorer on the basketball team, was suspended last month for an academic violation and quarterback Everett Golson missed the fall semester. Grant has said he intends to return to school next fall and play his senior season, and Golson, who has two years of eligibility left, has been readmitted to school for the spring semester.

The 6-foot-2, 203-pound Daniels was second on the team last season with 49 catches for 745 yards and is the leading returning receiver. He is a junior academically but has two years of eligibility left because he didn’t play as a freshman.

The news Thursday comes a day after running back George Atkinson III became the third Notre Dame player to decide to skip his final year of eligibility and enter the NFL draft. Defensive linemen Louis Nix III and Stephon Tuitt previously announced they wouldn’t be back.

The Irish finished this past season 9-4 and ranked No. 21.

Daniels’ dismissal from school was first reported by ESPN.com.
