Century Park becomes winter wonderland

After two days of feeling trapped in their homes, many Lake County residents took to the hills Thursday to enjoy the fresh snow.

Children and families swooshed down the hill at Century Park in Vernon Hills after the winter storm produced almost 17 inches of snow in the area.

“We have been digging out for two days,” Vernon Hills resident Michele Whelan said. “This is a wonderful sled hill, and the boys are having a great time.”

Nearly 50 people brought out their sleds, saucers, inflatable snow tubes, snowboards and toboggans to take advantage of the fluffy snow and enjoy the winter wonderland at the park.

Under bright sunny skies, screams could be heard from children as they raced down the hill, twisting and turning and jumping small hills until they stopped at the bottom.

“It's a great time and a perfect day,” Jeff Humbert of Libertyville said after riding down the hill on a snow tube. “I love the snow.”
