Rev. Jackson plans Christmas visit at county jail

The Rev. Jesse Jackson says he’ll spend the holidays taking part in a number of goodwill efforts.

The longtime civil rights leader tells The Associated Press that he will visit the Cook County jail on Christmas Day.

During a visit last Christmas, he delivered a sermon encouraging inmates to get tested for HIV, pray for forgiveness and ask for guidance to turn their lives around.

Jackson also says he plans to visit his imprisoned son, former U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr., over the holidays but would not say when.

Jackson Jr. is serving time in a federal prison in North Carolina after being convicted on fraud and conspiracy charges. .

The elder Jackson’ Rainbow PUSH Coalition also will give away Christmas food baskets on Saturday at its headquarters in Chicago.
