Storms create uncertainty for travelers

The busy holiday travel weekend underway in Illinois comes with predictions for nasty weather and hazardous driving conditions.

A major storm system aimed at the state has forecasters talking of heavy rain, freezing rain or snow, depending on the region.

It adds up to uncertainty for travelers heading off on holiday trips. As of Friday afternoon, Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport was experiencing 15-minute delays because of low visibility. Chicago’s Midway International Airport was seeing 30-minute delays.

The National Weather Service says Saturday could bring up to six inches of snow to northwestern Illinois. The Chicago area could get freezing rain, sleet and snow. East central Illinois and central Illinois may see heavy rain and flooding.

Saturday could bring heavy winds and thunderstorms to far southern Illinois.
