Peoria considering WWII ship on Illinois River

PEORIA — City leaders in Peoria are looking at how much it would cost to moor a World War II tank landing ship on the Illinois River.

The LST 325 naval vessel is based in Evansville, Ind., but its contract there expires in 2015. Officials with the ship told the Journal Star newspaper that a group from the Evansville nonprofit plans to visit Peoria for research.

City Manager Patrick Urich says bringing the ship to Peoria depends on costs and desire. The Peoria City Council recently gave the city permission to find out how much it would cost to bring the ship to central Illinois. The ship drew thousands when it previously docked in Peoria.

Urich says the city likely will have engineers estimate a price and location of a permanent dock.
