West Chicago teacher writes about autism for French publication

Marion Binet, a preschool teacher at the Early Learning Center in West Chicago Elementary District 33, recently wrote an article on supporting and educating students on the autism spectrum based on the model in place for at the Early Learning Center.

Binet, who is trilingual in English, Spanish and French, wrote the article in French and submitted it to “Autisme France,” a large French autism association.

“People in France are only now starting to hear about autism. So few teachers or professionals have been trained on what autism looks like, how to make adaptations, or to recognize which services a student may need — students are usually turned away from public schools,” Binet said.

Based on a friend’s frustrating experience with educating her daughter with autism in the French school system, Binet was motivated to write this article for the French autism association. The article was so well received, she was asked to speak at this year’s “Autisme France” conference.

With all expenses paid by the association, Binet spoke in November at the conference in Paris.

District 33 programs are modeled after the School Association for Special Education in DuPage County Strategies for Teaching Based on Autism Research program and supported by consultants from SASED.
