Grayslake Central's food drive collects 50,000 pounds

More than 50,000 pounds of food was collected for Grayslake Central High School's 21st Annual Food Drive.

On Nov. 16, students delivered collection bags in the community and they were picked up Nov. 23. An all-school drive was also held. On Friday, students from the student council and the public service practicum teamed up to organize and box the items.

The students, wearing matching red food drive shirts, worked busily in the lobby of the theater, forming human food chains spontaneously as a new load of food made its way to the lobby.

“Our students take a tremendous amount of pride in knowing that they are part of the biggest student-organized food drive in Lake County and that their efforts help so many people in their community,” practicum teacher Dustin Chierico said in a news release.

Some of the food will be used to provide 75 local families a holiday meal including a turkey, potatoes, milk and nonperishable goods. The rest of the food will go to the Avon Township Food Pantry.
