Health care needed only minor reform

Reader Jerry Loftis’ comments, “Is Tea Party motto: ‘Do As I say’?,” of Nov. 15, are a classic example of what brings me amazement each morning from low information voters.

He says, “the Tea Party accuses President Obama of being a socialist, yet they have no issue in taking 80 percent of the cost of their local roads from federal monies, Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid payments for themselves and their families.”

He further states that he thinks that if “they would pay back all the monies they have taken out of these federal, socialists programs, our national debt would drop drastically.“

The reality is: Current federal tax on gas is 18.4 cents per gallon and local state tax is 62.8 cents per gallon, which is $16 per fill up in taxes on my car. That is my share for using the roads and I use the toll road system to get to and from work so I do pay the tolls too. It’s the reason we have those taxes.

We pay for Social Security and Medicare. I pay thousands of dollars out of my paycheck every year for these programs and so does my employer. These programs are not given to us, we pay for them.

We had the best health care system in the world but it needed some small changes. The Republicans and the Tea Party wanted to offer changes but were not allowed to make any by the Democrats.

Well, The Democrats passed it and now everyone can see what is in it. A total disaster and we all will pay for it.

Elections have consequences, and a loser, even if he wins, will have consequences being felt by everyone.
