Entire community benefits from good schools

I have to agree with the writer who said that property taxes are high in Illinois, which is mainly due to overvaluation of properties. However, I must disagree with his premise that seniors and other property owners that do not have children in the school system should be exempt from paying school taxes because he and others paid school taxes when their kids were in school.

What he forgets is that at that time, seniors and other property owners without children were paying taxes supporting the cost of his kids going to school. Depending on the school district, I have seen costs projected $4,000 to $8,000 per pupil. If we taxed only parents with kids in school, we would have to close up the schools.

I am a senior just like the writer that I am responding to. The high taxes have taken their toll on many of us that own property in Lake County, but good school systems and well-qualified teachers and administrators are worth every dollar we pay. The future of this country one day will be the responsibility of the children we are educating today.

To the administrators of our school system and those that serve on school boards, we taxpayers expect you to be responsible for our tax dollars, eliminate waste and spend responsibly.
