Abbott recalls blood glucose test strips

Libertyville Township-based Abbott Laboratories is recalling some of its FreeStyle and FreeStyle Lite blood glucose test strips because they could produce incorrect readings.

Abbot said that it is taking 20 production lots of the strips off the market because they could return erroneously low blood sugar readings. The problem occurs when the strips are used with Abbott’s OmniPod insulin management system or with its FreeStyle and FreeStyle Flash blood glucose meters. Abbott said the problem doesn’t affect newer systems like FreeStyle Freedom, FreeStyle Lite, and FreeStyle Freedom Lite.

The recalled strips have expiration dates between March 2014 and March 2015. Abbott said consumers can contact the company to get free replacement strips.
