Illinois sees fewer deer-vehicle crashes in 2012

Illinois officials are reminding drivers to be alert for deer on the roadways during what they say is the one of the most active periods of the year for wildlife.

The Illinois Department of Transportation released figures Tuesday showing a decline in fatal crashes involving deer. Such crashes caused four people’s deaths last year, down from six deaths in 2011.

Deer-vehicle collisions also dropped to 15,489 last year, compared to just over 18,000 in 2011.

Transportation officials suggest that drivers be particularly wary and reduce speed at dusk and dawn when deer are most active. If you see deer, alert other drivers by tapping on the brakes. Deer will cross the road and double back, so make sure they’ve moved out of the area completely before driving on.
