GOP gov. candidate Rauner releases tax returns

A Republican who’s running to become Illinois governor reported more than $53 million in income last year while disclosing he has ownership stakes in three professional sports franchises, including the Chicago Bulls.

Winnetka venture capitalist Bruce Rauner released his 2012 tax return Monday.

The Chicago Sun-Times reports he paid $10.1 million in federal taxes last year and another $2.6 million in state taxes.

He reported $28.1 million in income in 2011 and $27.1 million in 2010.

In a statement, Rauner says he’s worked “extremely hard” and feels “incredibly blessed to have earned financial success.”

Meanwhile, a spokesman says Rauner owns a stake in the Bulls as well as the Pittsburgh Steelers and Boston Red Sox.

Rauner says if he’s elected he’d put his holdings in a blind trust.
