More charges filed after Prophetstown fire

PROPHETSTOWN, Ill. — Two half-brothers who are accused of setting a fire that destroyed eight buildings in a small northern Illinois community are facing more charges in juvenile court.

Whiteside County prosecutors filed three more felony criminal damage counts against the brothers, who are 12 and 16. The two already faced more than a dozen charges, including arson, for the July fire in Prophetstown.

Authorities say the fire was set in a recycling bin behind a restaurant in the Whiteside County city of 2,000 residents. Many of the buildings were 150 years old.

Crews have removed rubble from the buildings that were all on the same downtown block.
