Wheeling to start mapping crime online

The Wheeling Police Department has partnered with crimemapping.com to offer Wheeling residents information on the latest crimes that have occurred in the village.

The website will display a map indicating where a crime took place, based on information obtained from the Wheeling Police Department Records database. This crime location map is provided as a public resource for general information and is not a complete history of crimes committed or reported.

The website map shows an approximate block location where crimes have occurred. Fifteen specific types of crime may be identified with icon pinpoints. The following will be posted if having occurred; arson, assault, burglary, disturbing the peace, drugs/alcohol violations, DUI, fraud, homicides, motor vehicle theft, robbery, theft/larceny, vandalism and illegal use of a weapon. Site visitors can choose to display crime locations based on the type of crime and/or by date.

Users can sign up for additional features such as crimemapping.com mobile or to have crime alerts sent directly to their phone. A link to the new crime map is located on the Village of Wheeling website home page at www.wheelingil.gov.
