Batavia school board to discuss students’ homelessness

The Batavia school board will learn about the district’s homeless children, including the effect of homelessness on academic performance, at tonight’s meeting.

Superintendent Lisa Hichens will discuss the definitions of homelessness; the role of the district’s liaison to the homeless; support for families; transportation, supplies and medical resources for homeless students; and other supports provided by the district and charities to homeless students.

The board meets at 7 p.m. at the Rosalie Jones Administration Center, 337 W. Wilson St.

In the 2013 state report card, Batavia reported that 1 percent, or about 62, of its students were homeless.
