Retired and senior volunteers sought for student assistance

The Retired & Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP), sponsored by Community Action Partnership of Lake County, makes a difference in the lives of children, families, seniors, veterans and military families in our community.

RSVP is a volunteer “placement service” for persons ages 55 and older. Volunteers share their experience, skills and talent within their community.

In order to maximize the impact and solve community problems, RSVP of Lake County will primarily address the following focus areas: Head Start classroom assistance; tutoring and mentoring disadvantaged students K-8; helping persons with disabilities and the elderly maintain their independence; supporting food pantries to alleviate long-term hunger; and engage in services that benefit our military families and veteran community and more.

Volunteers are needed immediately in a variety of areas including: Early Childhood classroom assistants, one-on-one elementary student tutors/mentors (Zion, Waukegan, North Chicago, Grayslake and other communities); drivers for escorted transportation and food delivery; resale shop assistants; emergency food pantry assistant; community garden volunteers; blood drive registrants; and veteran and military support services.

Potential volunteers should have excellent customer service and communication skills. Willing volunteers are screened, interviewed, trained and agree to a background check before beginning service.

In addition, with the high cost of gas, volunteers are eligible for mileage reimbursement, meal reimbursement and are covered by an excess liability insurance policy.

RSVP of Lake County is sponsored by CAPOLC and is administered by the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), the federal agency that improves lives, strengthens communities, and fosters civic engagement through service (Senior Corps, AmeriCorps and etc.) and volunteering.

CAPOLC is one of 1,000 agencies across the United States established under the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964 to fight America’s War on poverty and the largest social organization in Lake County, providing a wide range of services.

For more than 49 years, CAPOLC, a nonprofit organization, has administered the Lake County Head Start (Early Childhood Development Program), Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, Youth and Family Services (Emergency Assistance, Food Pantry and Summer Day Camp), Weatherization, RSVP and affordable housing programs.
