7-year-old’s birthday plans were upstaged

The day President Kennedy was shot was the day before my seventh birthday. I was in second grade at Green Valley School in Lombard. I don’t remember exactly when or how I found out about the assassination, but I’m sure we knew before we went home that Friday.

Even though I can’t remember what birthday presents I got most years, in 1963 I know I got a globe. I even remember that year I brought Hershey bars to school for treats. However, what I remember most was that my birthday, that special day in most kids’ lives, was on a Saturday, a day without school, and was ruined because there were no Saturday morning cartoons. I guess it was hard for a 7-year-old to understand that the president’s tragic and untimely death was vastly more important than Bugs Bunny.
