Arlington Heights fire victims identified

The victims who died overnight Wednesday in an Arlington Heights house fire have been identified: Doris M. Miller, the 93-year-old homeowner; Tetiana Krych, 62, who was Miller’s live-in caregiver; and Svitlana Kandelis, 40, who was Krych’s daughter and had spent the night with her mother. Krych and Kandelis were Russian immigrants. Kandelis had been studying to become a nurse at Harper College in Palatine. Full story.

Veterans tributes this weekend in Aurora

The soccer fields behind West Aurora High School will be a solemn place this weekend in the lead-up to Veterans Day on Monday. The school is host to two tributes to veterans: The Moving Wall, a three-fifths replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, and The Healing Field, which features 2,013 American flags flying in salute to all of our veterans. South Elgin president remembered

South Elgin Village President Jim Hansen was remembered during his funeral yesterday as someone who loved his family, his friends and the village of South Elgin. Hansen died Nov. 1 at the age of 53 after battling lung cancer for nearly five months. Village Administrator Larry Jones said Hansen evolved from a young man who drove too fast and stayed out too late, to a patient and practical leader whose sole focus was South Elgin’s best interest. Will taxpayers want to pay for air conditioning?

Grayslake Elementary District 46 is exploring whether to ask voters at the ballot box if they’d be willing to raise their taxes to pay for air conditioning at two schools and other potential needs. “I thought I’d never, ever say that word out loud — referendum,” Superintendent Ellen Correll said. She said cooling Woodview and Meadowview schools could cost up to $1.6 million. Full story.

School bleacher dispute in Crystal Lake

Will bleachers constructed by Crystal Lake South High School be allowed to remain? Attorneys for the city of Crystal Lake and for several people whose properties abut the school say the school should have had its construction plans reviewed before beginning construction. A McHenry County judge heard arguments yesterday in a lawsuit filed by the city and homeowners. A decision is expected next month. Full story.

Suburban Latinos recognized

Dozens of people and organizations from the suburbs were honored last night with Reflejos Reflecting Excellence Awards during a ceremony and dinner at Harper College in Palatine. The winners were nominated for the awards by the readers of Reflejos, the Daily Herald’s publication for the suburban Latino community. Full story.

Daily Herald Baking Challenge contestants advance

Dozens of bakers turned out, treats in hand, last night for the Daily Herald’s Home Baking Challenge, and after the judges had tasted every last dessert, 10 bakers were selected to represent the suburbs at America’s Baking and Sweets Show Nov. 15-17 in Schaumburg. Full story.

Cutler ready to play Sunday

Even though Bears quarterback Jay Cutler was expected to be out 4-6 weeks after suffering a torn groin muscle Oct. 20 in a loss to Washington, Cutler says he’s ready to play this Sunday against the Detroit Lions in a game that will determine first place in the division. Cutler went through a full practice yesterday in Lake Forest. “If I wasn’t back to 100 percent, or they had any doubts, I wouldn’t have been practicing today,” Cutler said. Full story.

New Cubs manager stays positive

New Cubs Manager Rick Renteria was formally introduced yesterday during a conference call with reporters. If his introduction is any indication, Renteria is going to keep positive, despite the odds he and his new team are facing. “If we were to come in here and assume we’re going to lose, what kind of expectations have been laid for the players that are here?” Renteria said. “The reality is that my expectation is that we’re going to compete and win.” Full story.
