Route 47 reopens after diesel spill

Route 47 near Huntley reopened this morning, more than 12 hours after a three-vehicle crash spilled approximately 100 gallons of diesel fuel onto the roadway.

The crash occurred about 6 p.m. on Route 47 between Interstate 90 and Big Timber Road. Kane County Sheriff’s officials said two cars and a semitrailer truck were heading south on Route 47 when one of the cars made a U-turn in the road.

The semi swerved to avoid striking the car but went into a ditch on the east side of Route 47, then back up onto the road, coming to a rest on the west shoulder. A gas tank on the semi ruptured, causing diesel fuel to spill onto the road and into the ditch.

No injuries were reported, sheriff’s police said.

Route 47 was closed overnight between I-90 and Big Timber Road while crews cleaned up the spill.
