CTA suspends workers for train crash
CHICAGO — The Chicago Transit Authority has fired two workers and suspended two others for actions leading to a train crash that injured 33.
CTA spokesman Brian Steele said Friday two electrical workers were fired for improperly cleaning and allowing water into an electrical junction box on one of the train cars involved in the September crash.
A switchman was suspended for three days for allegedly leaving the train powered up for 48 hours and failing to notify a supervisor. A cleaning supervisor was suspended for two weeks, but the CTA did not explain why.
Amalgamated Transit Union spokesman Robert Kelly says they CTA workers shouldn't have been punished because they did nothing wrong.
The CTA's move resulted from the unmanned, out-of-service train slamming into a stopped train filled with 40 passengers.
