Walking tour to honor veterans interred in Waukegan cemetery

The Waukegan History Museum of the Waukegan Park District and the Waukegan Historical Society has an upcoming free guided walking tour on Saturday, Nov. 9, that tells the heroic stories of United States veterans who are laid to rest at Waukegan’s Oakwood Cemetery.

Veterans dating back to the War of 1812 are laid to rest at Waukegan’s Oakwood Cemetery. Waukegan History Museum Supervisor Ty Rohrer will lead participants to the grave sites of numerous soldiers and will share their heroic stories. Stories of soldiers who fought in the War of 1812, Civil War, World War I, World War II, Korean War, and Vietnam War will be featured.

Participants will check in and load on the shuttle bus outside of Lilac Cottage, 1911 N. Sheridan Road in Bowen Park. The shuttle bus will load promptly at 10 a.m. and will return to Lilac Cottage at the conclusion of the guided walk.

Dress for the weather with comfortable walking shoes. Bring your own beverage. Tours will continue in the event of rain but will be canceled if there is thunder and lightning. The guided walk will include unpaved walkways and uneven ground.

Registration is required and there is limited space. The deadline to register has been extended to Nov. 7.
