Ex-Milwaukee police officer gets guns returned

MILWAUKEE — A Wisconsin judge has ordered nine guns returned to a former Milwaukee police officer on duty disability retirement for mental health issues.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports the guns were taken from 35-year-old Jason Mucha in November during an emergency detention under Wisconsin’s mental health law.

Mucha supervised four officers charged last year with conducting or observing illegal strip-searches. He was never charged with a crime. But in applying for disability, he said he suffered mental trauma and a breakdown in March 2012 as a result of news reports about him going back to 2007.

Still, Judge J.D. Watts determined Mucha met the requirements for getting his guns back.

Milwaukee Alderman Joe Davis Sr. says the case shows there’s a clear loophole in the law.
