Barrington advances to regional final

Mid-Suburban League champion Barrington advanced to the championship match of the Highland Park Class 4A girls volleyball regional with a 29-27, 25-21 victory over No. 9 seed St. Viator.

The No. 8 Fillies (20-16) will face top-seeded Lake Zurich at 6 p.m. Thursday for the title.

Leading the way for Barrington were Christy Roney (9 kills), Jess Terrill (5) and Megan Talbot (4) while MSL West player of the year Claire Waliczek collected 17 assists.

Talbot also had 4 blocks while Katie Clement had one.

Top diggers were Waliczek (14), Roney (13), Olivia Hagan (11) and Emily Casaletto (10).

Ellie Lauderback and Emma French served aces for the winners.

Mary Cleary (8 kills), Megan Mueller (6) and Grace Fedus (4) led the attack for the Lions (18-17) while Molly Ziegler handed out 20 assists.

Ellie Meyer paced back row with 12 digs while Kristen Abrahamson had 8.

Schaumburg d. West Chicago: Schaumburg advanced to the championship of the West Chicago regional by defeating the host school 25-16, 25-18.

The No. 8 Saxons (23-13) will face No. 1 Glenbard West on Thursday at 6 p.m. for the title.

Kiana Lewis led Schaumburg with 11 kills while Oyinkan Arinola and Abbie Rahn each had 4.

Sarah Krug and Jada Blackwell chipped in 3 kills apiece to the attack set by Blackwell (16 assists), who also had 3 blocks.

Sarah Stuehm led the defense with 10 digs, followed by Blackwell (8), Akinola (6) and Lewis (5).

Maine West d. Resurrection: No. 7 Maine West advanced to Thursday’s 6 p.m. championship of the Class AA Maine South regional with a 25-18, 25-18 win over No. 11 Resurrection.

The Warriors (16-19) will face No. 3 Maine South at 6 p.m. for the title.

Brittany Collins (6 kills, 6 aces), Allison Grzebien (6 kills, 2 block) and Kassidy Riportella (2 aces, 13 assists), Jana Lopez (4 aces) and Alyssa Suriano (2 blocks) led the Warriors.

“Resurrection put up a tough block,” said Maine West coach Randy Tiller. “They stuffed Allison (Grzebien) and Julia (Huinker), who don’t get blocked often. Our serving was focused, precise, and almost flawless (14 aces and only 1 error).

“The team really wanted this one. On Thursday night, it will come down to who wants it more.”

Glenbrook North d Meadows: No. 5 Glenbrook North posted a 26-24, 25-18 victory over No. 12 Rolling Meadows (21-15) in the semifinals of the Waukegan regional.

Mid-Suburban East player of the year Jenny Vliet led the Mustangs with 9 kills followed by Ashley Montanez (5). Lauren Sokolowski and Hannah Mickey each had 2 kills.

Vliet also handed out 7 assists while Sami Kay had 10.

Lake Zurich d Prospect: Top seed Lake Zurich posted a 25-13, 25-12 victory over No. 16 Prospect (13-23) in the semifinals of the Highland Park regional.

Glenbrook South d Fremd: No. 7 Glenbrook South posted a 25-21, 26-24 over No. 10 Fremd in the semifinals of the Carmel regional.

Batavia d. Elk Grove: No. 5 Batavia rallied for a 21-25, 25-14, 25-12 victory over No. 12 Elk Grove (16-18) in the semifinals of the Addison Trail regional.
