Cuts expected in nutrition program

SPRINGFIELD — State officials say Illinois families receiving federal nutrition assistance will start seeing a monthly decrease in November.

The Illinois Department of Human Services says the changes will affect those receiving Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program funding. Illinois officials say the reduction is happening because temporary increases in program funding are expiring.

Under the new funding rates a family of four in Illinois will see a $36 decrease in benefits starting Friday.

The Illinois human services department administers SNAP in the state. More than 2 million people in Illinois participate in the program.
