1 dead in 4-vehicle crash that closes Higgins Road

Des Plaines firefighters said Thursday that a man was killed in a crash involving four vehicles on Higgins Road near I-90 in Rosemont.

Rosemont police confirmed that the crash resulted in a fatality.

Meanwhile, Higgins Road is closed until 8 a.m. from Mannheim Road to Touhy Avenue.

According to Des Plaines firefighters, the accident occurred around 7:30 p.m. Thursday. They said two vehicles were possibly racing on westbound Higgins Road south of I-90 when one of the vehicles lost control, hit the median and went flying into the eastbound lanes, crashing into two vehicles and then landing on O'Hare airport property.

The driver, who was ejected about 50 feet from the car, died at the scene, firefighters said.

Firefighters confirmed that there was one other victim who was transported to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge with nonlife-threatening injuries.

Both Des Plaines fire and Rosemont police units responded. Rosemont police did not have additional details, saying the crash is under investigation.

The man has yet to be identified by authorities. The Cook County medical examiner's office could not provide confirmation.
