Golf outing to recognize community heroes

Throughout its history, DuPage County has been a place of notable and many unsung, community heroes — from Native Americans who tended the land and pioneers who built towns to developers who continued to shape the community through business and commerce for inhabitants. Today, many of the county’s citizens are doing great things to ensure our community continues to thrive.

With the goal of honoring these past and present heroes, People’s Resource Center and the DuPage County Historical Museum are teaming up to present On Par for DuPage, an Oktoberfest-themed golf outing, at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 22, at Arrowhead Golf Club, 26W151 Butterfield Road, Wheaton.

“Whether we’re talking about the present or talking about the past, we’ll ultimately see neighbors helping neighbors in the community. That’s what this partnership is about,” said Elizabeth F. Higgins, senior director of programs at People’s Resource Center.

Since 1975, People’s Resource Center has been bringing neighbors together to respond to hunger and poverty in DuPage County.

This event will honor those neighbors through the Hope and History Hero Award. The award will recognize an individual who, through business and community work, has helped create opportunities in DuPage. More information and nomination forms can be found at peoplesrc.org.

“This award honors the businesses that have a rich history in DuPage County and are also moving forward for the betterment of those in our community,” said Sara Arnas, curator at the DuPage County Historical Museum.

Higgins agrees.

“We’re celebrating the connection of people who founded the community and those who continue to build the community through service,” she said.

The outing will feature 18 holes of golf on Arrowhead’s course, a continental breakfast and an Oktoberfest-themed dinner and craft beer. A German oompah band will perform during the dinner. The fee is $150.
