Illinois joins program to train veterans for jobs

The state of Illinois is joining with community colleges and manufacturing companies to train veterans for in-demand careers.

Gov. Pat Quinn announced the program, known as the Get Skills to Work coalition, on Wednesday.

He was joined by business leaders and actor Gary Sinise, who started a foundation to support veterans and their families.

Get Skills to Work connects veterans with employers who have open positions in manufacturing, and helps provide the training veterans need for long-term careers.

Russell Stokes is president and CEO of GE Transportation. He says veterans “embody the characteristics that make great employees.” He also says the program can help close a skills gap in advanced manufacturing and ensure the U.S. remains competitive in the industry.
