Harper Volleyball Downs Milwaukee in Straight Sets

The Harper College volleyball team stayed hot on Tuesday night, winning for the 12th time in the last 14 matches with a straight sets victory (25-13, 25-17, 25-11) over host Milwaukee Area Technical College.

The Hawks (24-16, 8-3 N4C) jumped out to early leads of 6-0, 9-1 and 17-6 in the first set behind strong serving from Rebekah Hischke (Algonquin, Ill./Dundee Crown), who was 7-for-9 with five aces. Claire Flugel pitched in seven digs while Alex Messner (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Fremd) totaled five digs in the win.

The Stormers kept the second set close and the Hawks struggled in the service game, leading to an 11-11 tie. Harper scored 14 of the final 20 points en route to victory. Outside hitter Sara Baldwin (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) tallied nine digs and two kills while setter Valerie Bazemore (Houston, Tex./Keller) had a team-high 11 assists.

Hischke served another strong game in the third set, going 10-for-10 with two aces, helping build an early 13-4 lead. Setter Katherine Milla (Honduras/CEAD Christian School) paced the Hawks with 10 assists in the victory.

For the match, Veronica Dabrowski (Mount Prospect, Ill./Rolling Meadows) led the Harper attack with eight kills. Baldwin paced the defense with 14 digs, and Bazemore led the team with 17 assists.

Chasing History

For a Harper season record in digs, libero Kelly Spychala (Des Plaines, Ill./Elk Grove) needs 207 more digs this year. For a Harper career record, Spychala needs 356 more digs, 103 digs to end up second and 78 digs to end up third on the list.

For a Harper season record in kills, outside hitter Veronica Dabrowski (Mount Prospect, Ill./Rolling Meadows) still needs 139 kills for third place, 184 kills for second place and 282 kills to pass middle hitter Alex Mason's record of 660 kills in one season.

The Hawks return to action Thursday night as they travel to Madison to take on No. 1 Madison College in their final N4C matchup of the season. In their previous two meetings, the WolfPack topped the Hawks – in straight sets on Aug. 24 at the COD 18th Annual Classic and in four sets on Sept. 19 at Harper College.
