AWOL U.S. Marine arrested in attic of Naperville home

A Naperville man has been charged with obstructing justice after he allegedly hid an AWOL U.S. Marine from South Carolina in his attic.

Authorities said Jeremiah Rivera, 21, of Conway S.C., was taken into custody on Oct. 7 and transferred back to the custody of the U.S. Marine Corps.

In addition, Daniel Vermette, 24, was charged with a misdemeanor count of obstructing justice after he lied to police about the whereabouts of Rivera when police came knocking.

Naperville Police Sgt. Lou Cammiso said police were asked to check out Vermette's home in the 2500 block of Sheehan Drive to see if Rivera was hiding out there. When they arrived at the home, Vermette told police Rivera was not there. However, Cammiso said, Rivera was found hiding in the attic of the home following a search and taken into custody.

Rivera was initially transported to DuPage County jail, but then transferred back to the Marines, Cammiso said. Vermette posted bond and was released from custody. His next court date is unknown at this time.
